When a Dog Suddenly Can't Walk: Understanding IVDD, FCE, and How Animal Chiropractic Can Support Recovery
This week's blog is a little different.
It was inspired by a phone call I received from a concerned pet owner whose dog had suddenly lost the use of its hind legs without any known trauma or injury. Like any pet owner would be, they were scared and searching for answers. They wanted to know if animal chiropractic could help.
During our conversation, I was reminded how many different conditions can look almost identical in the beginning. A dog that suddenly can't walk doesn't automatically have one specific condition. There are several possibilities, and that's exactly why a veterinary examination is so important.
As an animal chiropractor, diagnosing neurological conditions is outside my scope of practice. My role is to work alongside your veterinarian—not replace them. Before I recommend chiropractic care, I always want to understand what your veterinarian believes is happening so we can provide the safest and most appropriate care for your pet.
One of the most common conditions people have heard of is Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Another condition that is discussed less often—but can sometimes look very similar—is Fibrocartilaginous Embolism (FCE).
Although both can cause sudden weakness or paralysis, they are very different conditions.
What is IVDD?
IVDD occurs when one of the discs between the vertebrae begins to bulge or rupture, placing pressure on the spinal cord.
Dogs with IVDD may show:
• Neck or back pain
• Crying out when moving or being picked up
• Reluctance to jump or use stairs
• Weakness or wobbliness
• Knuckling or dragging the paws
• Difficulty standing
• In severe cases, paralysis
Some dogs develop these signs gradually, while others experience a more sudden onset.
Because inflammation and pressure on the spinal cord are involved, veterinarians often prescribe strict rest, pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication (such as steroids or NSAIDs), and muscle relaxants when appropriate. Many dogs with mild to moderate IVDD begin showing improvement within days to a couple of weeks.
What is FCE?
FCE stands for Fibrocartilaginous Embolism. It is often described as a "spinal stroke."
Instead of the spinal cord being compressed by a disc, a tiny piece of disc material enters a blood vessel supplying the spinal cord, temporarily interrupting blood flow.
Dogs with FCE often show:
• A very sudden onset—often while running or playing
• A yelp or cry when it first occurs
• Weakness or paralysis that develops within minutes
• One side may be more affected than the other
• Very little pain after the initial event
• Symptoms that generally do not continue getting worse after the first several hours
Because FCE isn't caused by ongoing inflammation or compression, medications like steroids or muscle relaxants may not produce the same improvement they often do with IVDD. Recovery usually depends on supportive care and rehabilitation.
Why an Accurate Diagnosis Matters
At first glance, IVDD and FCE can look very similar. That's why your veterinarian may recommend advanced imaging, such as an MRI, especially if the diagnosis isn't clear.
X-rays are excellent for evaluating the bones of the spine, but they cannot show the spinal cord or distinguish between many neurological conditions.
Having the correct diagnosis helps determine the most appropriate treatment plan and guides the rehabilitation process.
Where Does Animal Chiropractic Fit In?
One of the questions I hear most often is:
"Can chiropractic help?"
The answer is: yes, it can—but only after your veterinarian has evaluated your pet, confirmed the diagnosis, and determined chiropractic care is appropriate.
Animal chiropractic does not replace veterinary treatment. Instead, it can be a valuable part of a larger recovery plan by helping the body move more efficiently, reducing compensation, and supporting normal function as healing takes place.
How chiropractic can help with IVDD
Once a dog with IVDD has been evaluated by a veterinarian and is stable enough for care, chiropractic may help by:
• Improving motion in areas of the spine and joints that are not directly affected
• Reducing compensation and strain in the neck, back, hips, and limbs
• Supporting better posture and movement patterns
• Helping restore comfort and mobility as inflammation decreases
• Complementing rest, medication, and rehabilitation prescribed by the veterinarian
In other words, chiropractic care can help the rest of the body move better while the injured area heals.
How chiropractic can help with FCE
With FCE, chiropractic care can also be helpful once the dog has been examined by a veterinarian and is medically stable.
Because FCE often causes sudden weakness and altered movement, dogs may begin compensating in other parts of the body almost immediately. Chiropractic care may help by:
• Addressing compensatory tension and stiffness that develops after the injury
• Improving motion in the spine and joints that are working harder to make up for weakness
• Supporting more balanced movement as the dog regains strength
• Helping reduce discomfort caused by overuse in other areas of the body
• Working alongside rehabilitation to support recovery and function
Even though FCE is not caused by spinal compression, chiropractic can still play an important role in helping the body adapt, recover, and move more normally again.
Every patient is different, which is why I always work to complement your veterinarian's recommendations rather than replace them.

If your dog suddenly becomes weak, begins dragging a leg, loses the ability to stand, or seems painful for no obvious reason, don't wait.
Schedule an examination with your veterinarian as soon as possible. The sooner the cause is identified, the sooner an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan can begin.
